Over the past five, the Museum of Afro-American History has steadily expanded its educational programs which are offered at our historical sites operated in cooperation with the National Park Service and at schools and other external sites throughout New England. We are now pleased to make available an exciting new educational resource: Return to Glory, which will air throughout the country in January and February 2000.
This one-hour video, narrated by Emmy-award-winning actor Andre Braugher, recounts the moving history of Boston's famed Civil War monument to Col. Robert Gould Shaw and the men of the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
Through the skillful use of historic photographs, correspondence, memoirs, personal interviews, and scenes portrayed by historic re-enactors, Return to Glory, brings to life the diverse meanings and simple power of this national historic site.
The program depicts the creative struggle of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, then America's foremost sculptor, who was commissioned in 1884 by the Shaw family, and the monument's triumphant dedication in 1897. It further depicts the years of neglect that followed as the nation retreated from its commitment to racial equality.
Return to Glory also traces the monument's gradual rebirth through a biracial effort, culminating in the monument's 1997 centennial celebration, addressed by Ret. Gen. Colin Powell.
An educational package, including the documentary, a second resource video, and a curriculum guide, has been developed. For copies contact the museum at:
