Hidden History of Freedom
An exhibition of 18th and 19th centuries artifacts found in the walls of a Nantucket home including shoes, clothing and household items that provide clues about early life on the island.

Award-winning actor, André DeShields will appear on Nantucket Island on July 12 and July 13. Proceeds to benefit the Museum of African American History (MAAH) African Meeting House on Nantucket, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), and the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket.

Frank and Bette Spriggs Annual Lecture
Along the Southern Freedom Trail with Robert Smalls

Lecture by Dr. Bernard Powers, Professor of History, College of Charleston (South Carolina).

Dr. Powers wrote Black Charlestonians: A Social History 1822-1885 and served as an associate editor for The South Carolina Encyclopedia. He appeared in the segment about Robert Smalls in PBS film series, Slavery in the Making of America.

Summer Tours on Nantucket!

The Museum's African Meeting House and the Florence Higginbotham House on Nantucket are open to the public July and August, Tuesday through Saturday, 11am - 3 pm, Sunday 1 - 3pm.

The Nantucket Campus will close for the season on September 1st. September through June, visits are by appointment only.

Nantucket Lightship Basket Raffle

Beginning Daffodil Weekend we will raffle an original Nantucket Lightship Basket, made and donated by Dr. Thomas Springer.

Raffle tickets will sell for $5.00 each and will be sold through Christmas Stroll, Friday, December 3. The basket is 11”d x 7” h; handle, base, and rim are made of cherry. The basket is valued at $1,200.00. Please see attached pictures.

The winner will be announced during our Christmas Stroll program
at 7 pm, December 3, 2010

Lecture: The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the early years of the African Meeting House.

This paper will discuss the early beginnings of the African Meeting House and the role of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in these efforts. Letters from two missionaries who worked on Nantucket in the early 19th century will be reviewed with some new insights into the inauguration of the building in January of 1825.
